Boots are a winter essential for anyone who lives in colder climates (and even for many who don’t, we’re looking at you Californians). While there’s no shortage of stylish options, aside from being tough enough to withstand the elements, the toughest winter boots usually come at a cost: bulk. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised by the recently launched CQPs Sabulo: it is sturdy and durable but is worn with all the ease of sneakers.

Perhaps that shouldn’t be so surprising, given that the Swedish brand has made a name for itself with elegantly understated tennis shoes (which we’ve sung the praises of before). The Sabulo is CQP’s first design to break out of the sneaker mould, but it retains the comfort and minimalist beauty that made us fans of the brand’s kicks. As for the latter, the Sabulo has the utilitarian aesthetic of traditional hiking boots but is rendered with a lighter touch – it’s a no-brainer with denim but is refined enough to pair with smarter things.

More than the design, it’s the way this boot fits that sets it apart. Sat on a sturdy, lugged rubber sole, the Sabulo is adept at navigating icy city streets but, unlike many equally rugged shoes, doesn’t feel like you’re carrying ankle weights, ideal for long days on the go. Lightly padded collars and roomy toes up the comfort factor while water-resistant Italian suede uppers look and feel decidedly luxurious (but don’t worry about being too precious with them, they can take some time). Even for those who choose boots more for style than utility, the CQPs are light and good looking enough to be enjoyed whatever the weather.
