Golden Goose has never been particularly fond of the understated approach. The brand built its name on pre-distressed sneakers finished with flourishes like tape applications and shiny stars – not exactly the stuff of minimalist fantasies, but a huge hit with folks who appreciate the combination of a high-end craftsmanship and a devil-may-care aesthetic. Sneakers like the Super-Star and V-Star have always been rooted in classic shapes, keeping them tied to a sneaker history (and aesthetic) we all know. But the last of GG, space star, takes it to a whole new level.
“With this innovative and original design, we want to introduce a new concept in the field of footwear”, says Silvio Campara, CEO of Golden Goose. “It’s timeless, genderless and designed to be worn outdoors or indoors. It’s a shoe without boundaries.” When you see the shoe, you see what Campara stands for. It’s like the love child of super-comfy slippers and bulbous, futuristic runners – and it’s definitely not the kind of thing you see every day. This, of course, is by design.
“Space-Star is inspired and dedicated to people,” Campara continues. “It’s a one-of-a-kind shoe, designed for escaping the daily grind and for those special individual moments when you want to ’embrace your own space,’ as the tagline goes.” Of course, this is Golden Goose, expect some basic elements and brand DNA, namely the pre-distressed look (Campara calls it “lived in”) that defines the sneakers company’s success story since their first breakthrough in the States.
Will the Space-Star become the next tent pole in the Golden Goose range? We will have to wait and see. But one thing is pretty clear even now, early in the style’s life: Golden Goose is betting big to get a little weird, and it’s going to be a very interesting ride.
