Nothing says summer like a pair of cool white sneakers. There have been so many shoe trends over the past few years that involve white sneakers like the Air Force 1. Companies like New Balance, Adidas, Nike, and even luxury shoe brands like APL have jumped on the trend. And I love the look of all white sneakers… but personally, I’m always afraid that as me, I’m going to get them dirty and gross the very first time I wear them outside the house. Someone else??

Here are some tips from The Fashion Spot on how to keep your white sneakers clean and protected…at least for a little while.

1. As soon as you take them out of the box, pre-treat them with a stain and water repellent solution. Founder of Refreshing the wardrobe Robyn Wellikoff says Jason Markk Repel Spray is a good brand. Another brand you can use is HEX Performance Laundry Detergent mixed with a little cold water.

2. If you haven’t pre-treated them and you stain them, use an old toothbrush or rag with a small amount of laundry detergent and water. Robyn Wellikoff says to try to remove stains as soon as you see them appear. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove them from the fabric.

3. If it’s an all-white fabric like a running shoe, you can put it in the washing machine, but do NOT put it in the dryer. Instead, air dry them. Also, for tougher stains, be sure to pre-treat them before throwing them in the wash. Also remember to remove the insoles before washing.
