New Balance heads into summer with Staud, thanks to the duo’s fifth collaboration. The new collection combines vintage surf culture with California ease, showcasing each brand’s strengths simultaneously.
The new collection – also the duo’s latest – features a variety of athletic pieces including running shorts, sports bras, leggings and tank tops. Cast in a color palette of punchy reds and pinks with saturated blue tones, the line draws on the aesthetic of the 80s and 90s in Southern California for a decidedly retro feel. Fashion-focused pieces also articulate the sports theme through stretchy textures and silhouettes, including a zip-up dress, track pants and asymmetrical tops accented with white zippers. The line continued the pair’s focus on fusing fashion and sports, as seen in their previous collaborations inspired by activities like boxing and tennis.
“For one of my first trips after quarantine, I went to Costa Rica and fell in love with surfing. From athletics to the culture that surrounds the sport, it was a natural choice for the theme of this new collection,” Staud co-founder Sarah Staudinger said in a statement. “We’ve accentuated the Southern California vintage surf scene of the late ’80s and early ’90s, but with new details that bring more functionality to the rooms. Bright reds and pinks that showcase our signature colorways are mixed with baby blues and bold logos for that heritage feel.
The line notably includes two new colorways of XC-72 sneakers from New Balance and Staud, which feature a lace-up silhouette with a recycled suede upper, as well as split outsoles and heel clips for added stability. New pairs in the round-toe model feature a multi-color palette of light blue, purple, yellow, and red. However, for those who prefer neutrals, there is also a molded style in white and sand beige. Each sells for $150 on the respective Staud and New Balance websites.
Staud and New Balance’s collaborations date back to 2019, when the brands united on their first line – which also marked Staud’s sportswear debut. Since then, the brands have continued to launch seasonal collaborative collections. They are also respective collaborators themselves; New Balance has a reputation for launching collections with brands such as Miu Miu, Todd Snyder and Aimé Leon Dore, while Staud has also launched a co-branded collection with Birkenstock. Their line has even found fans in a range of celebrities in recent years, including Katie Holmes.
The New Balance x Staud collection, which retails between $70 and $195, is available now on Staud’s website and New Balance’s website.
