We’ve all heard it: beauty is pain. But it doesn’t have to. The rise of streetwear, in my opinion, is a girl’s best friend (and guys, you can join in too). You don’t have to have heels to be dressed up, to be professional or to be fashionable. Sneakers can do the job and make your feet much happier in the process.

Years ago, a doctor told me to get rid of every pair of sandals and heels I owned and wear only tennis shoes while waiting for foot surgery. As a fashion lover, the idea did not appeal to me very much. However, six years later and more often than not, I still wear sneakers. Now I always have heels and sandals, but my closet revolves around my sneakers. From the Nike Air Max 97 to Beyonce’s Ivy Park, there’s a lot to love when it comes to sneakers.

If these shoes have never been your go-to and you don’t know where to start, get yourself a pair of all-white sneakers. The beauty of white sneakers is that they can go with almost anything you already wear with dress shoes. I wore a dress to a semi-formal wedding with heels, and several weeks later wore the same dress with my White Air Force to brunch and errands. Not only is it easier on your body, but it adds a bit more versatility to the clothes in your wardrobe.

Sometimes we can get stuck in the rut of wearing a shirt with the same pants and with the same shoes creating the same outfit over and over again. But even the simple act of swapping out one type of shoe for another can create a whole new look with a whole new vibe. Don’t limit your favorite pair of jeans to being paired with the same ballet flats every time. Your jeans deserve the pleasure of changing them. It also gives you the opportunity to wear these jeans more than once a week because you style them in a different way. Swapping out your heels for sneakers can give you the wardrobe refresh you’ve been looking for without having to buy all new clothes — just a new way to wear them.

It doesn’t mean you throw away your heels and never wear them again. There are definitely occasions when they are warranted, and we all like to wear them once in a while. But it gives you the opportunity to dress for fashion and comfort.

For men, I actually find sneakers look much more fashionable with suits than I do with an average dress shoe.

Now hear me out loud that this is not meant to be used as ammunition in an argument with your wife about why you should be able to wear your running shoes or the ones you’re mowing the lawn in tonight- the. These aren’t the tennis shoes we’re talking about here. I’m talking about cute white leather sneakers. Pair it with a slim blue suit and you have a fashionable outfit.

If you’re anything like me, your new pair of white sneakers will turn into endless styles with every color you could wear. As your shoe collection grows, so do the different roles that each outfit in your wardrobe can play. Do yourself a favor and invest in a pair of white sneakers. You will not regret it.
