After a two-year hiatus, the Run Our Shore event in Liverpool is back on the calendar.
The eighth annual Run Nova Scotia event has been postponed for the past two years due to COVID-19 health protocols.
“The event is really made possible as it is expected that (sanitary) restrictions will ease,” said Steve Burns, president of the host Active Living Options Society and director of the Run Our Shore event. “Then there are the volunteer groups that get involved, like the Port Medway Fire Department, Queens Ground Search and Rescue and the local RCMP. These people immediately intervened and said they were there.
The event is part of the Run Nova Scotia race series and is normally the kick-off event for its racing season. This year’s program is not yet available.
The last event took place in 2019 and 250 runners competed. The next event was scheduled to take place in 2021 pending restrictions, but in the end Run Nova Scotia canceled the series due to the pandemic. At that time, 175 runners were already registered.
These registrants were given the option of getting a refund or remaining on the list for 2022. A large majority chose to keep their names on the list.
Most of the registered participants who left their name on the list have been contacted. With over 50 other runners adding their names, at the time of writing there were a total of 200 runners booked, leaving around 60 remaining spots open.
This year’s race will include a 5K walk/run, 10K walk/run and a 21.1K half marathon. Burns said this year’s event will be scaled down a bit to allow volunteers to “get their feet wet”. The junior race will not take place and there will be no gatherings for food or other reasons.
“Basically the focus this year is to get people out and get active,” Burns said, adding that the 5k and 10k races were the most popular.
Burns also noted that he’s “satisfied” with the number of locals who have already registered for the event, while many more come from the Halifax area and Annapolis Valley.
Registration will remain open until 2 p.m. on April 29, the day before the race. There will be no walk-in entries this year. To register go to https://racoster.com/
The company is also hosting the long-running Privateer 5 Mile Road Race held during Privateer Days in late June, but Burns said whether or not it will host this one is “still up in the air.”
