Have conversations about domestic violence, urges Ian Wheeliker, the centre’s executive director, as it is one of the keys to preventing said violence from happening.

“For years, federal statistics have shown that for women 16 and older who are in common-law or marriage-type relationships, nearly 25% will experience one, more, or all types of violence, including verbal, emotional, physical and sexual,” says Wheeliker.

“It’s a staggering prevalence.”

Wheeliker says whether or not you’re on Walk a Mile this Thursday, take some time to reflect on the mundane nature of domestic violence.

“Even if our relationships are not violent, we have to ask ourselves how can we raise awareness and support those who are victims of violence. We want the community to know that there are people in this town specially trained to help deal with these situations,” he says.

“It’s kind of like any medical issue or community issue like crime, in that until it happens to you or your immediate family, you tend not to think about those things. things. Once a family member falls ill with an illness, for example, or is robbed, you become very aware of this problem. Domestic violence works the same way.

Check in with your friends, watch for red flags and be aware of their frequency, he adds.

“If anyone needs help, you can contact the outreach center and we’ll put you in touch with where you need to go.”
